How I Began Teaching Crazy Science
About 4 years ago, I got inspired after watching Steve Spangler on the Ellen Show. Steve is known for doing BIG science demonstrations and teaching science in a way that inspires kids. Steve uses easy to understand explanations AND draws you in and makes you laugh. My oldest son in particular LOVED Steve Spangler’s science videos. So I bought Steve’s book Naked Eggs and Flying Potatoes to try some fun experiments with my family.
A few weeks later, a friend and I hosted a backyard science party for 7 kids where we demonstrated science experiments from Steve’s book. The kids were able to do everything hands-on. We all had so much fun that we quickly planned another backyard science party. We began hosting these parties regularly and inviting more families to join us as we did crazy science experiments. I started diving deep into STEM books, You Tube videos, and educational websites to find thousands of science experiments that were fun and easy to do with kids.
Doing these backyard experiments helped my kids and I build a deeper bond. About a year later, my son and his twin sister asked me to host a science-themed birthday party for them. Everyone had so much fun, and I realized then that I had a growing passion for teaching science. This passion shaped a whole new career for me.
A few weeks after their party, I signed up to teach at an After School Enrichment program at my kids’ school. Naturally, we called the course Crazy Science. My goal was to inspire my students to develop a love of science by blowing their minds with exciting, hands-on science experiments. I wanted to help the kids develop a better understanding of scientific principles and leave them eager to learn more. I now teach these Crazy Science Enrichment classes at three elementary schools in Scripps Ranch. I plan to expand to more local schools in the future, so that I can help inspire many more kids to become passionate about science. Crazy Science has also run special events at local schools, hosted memorable science-themed birthday parties, and will begin offering weeklong summer camps in 2022.
Teaching Crazy Science classes has been an incredible experience, and it has allowed me to merge two passions of mine: (1) playing with really amazing toys…I mean…learning about science; and (2) fostering a love of learning in my students. There is nothing quite like seeing a kid’s jaw drop when they get to participate in an exciting science experiment or demonstration. I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to teach young kids every week about how truly exciting science can be.
